Best Of Me – Book Review

I don’t believe I have ever written a book review before, so the first few might be a little raw. For my first one, The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks

I am a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks and have been for quite some time. I have loved many of his past books, particularly A Bend in the Road and The Lucky One, but this book was a bit of a let down. Although the main characters were very likable, I found this book hard to really get in to. It didn’t capture my attention as most of his other works have, but I still finished in just a few days.

I thought it was very easy to relate to most of the characters but there was not enough emphasis put upon Amanda and Dawson’s relationship. Although I was very sympathetic for their situation and wanted to learn more about their relationship, it wasn’t a surprise when things worked out as they did. I found myself rooting for them even to the ending; Sparks has a way to do that to the reader.

It is for the most part a very realistic book. It does have a few unbelievable twists thrown in here and there, but there definitely could have been a bit more emphasis on certain parts of the story line. The interconnecting stories were intriguing and I thought these aspects were different from what Sparks normally gives us.

Sparks always manages to write very heartfelt yet heartbreaking stories but, again, I thought this book is just a bit below par. Don’t get me wrong, I would recommend it to anyone, it just fell a bit below my expectations for Nicholas Sparks and it definitely was not on the same level of some of his other works. I certainly look forward to seeing what he comes up with next. No matter what, he always gives us a very enjoyable read and I have complete confidence that he will continue to do so.

Up next…. American Wife! A book club was started over at Peanut Butter Fingers a few months ago, and American Wife was chosen for this month. This book seems perfect for my next reading adventure.

What are you reading? Are you in a book club (official or not)? Can I join?! 😉

I have read several online reviews of Nicholas Sparks’ latest book and many have found it to be lacking, at least compared to his other books. Hopefully the next one will be better! Glad you enjoyed it! I’ve read Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember, but none of his more recent works.

I’m not reading any books right now, but have plenty of running-related ones to delve into! First on my list is Hal Higdon’s Marathon, then Running for the Hansons by Sage Canada (I think that’s the author’s name).

Ooooh I also love A Bend in the Road! I’ve read all of his books and for some reason I haven’t been super excited about jumping into this one. I think I could just sense it wasn’t going to measure up. But none the less I have purchased it, it sits on my kindle waiting for me to read it. I guess I’ll get there eventually…
